I was fortunate enough to join McMillan Williams in October 2013 as a paralegal at the Bexleyheath office working in the Family Department. I was attracted to McMillian Williams due to the diverse practice areas that McMillan William specialises in. I was also attracted to working for McMillian Williams because they encourage and train their paralegals to get a Training Contract.
In March 2015 I was offered a Training Contract with the Family Department. I found it to be very advantageous having previously been a Paralegal in this department. It made the transition from Paralegal to Trainee Solicitor much smoother and I feel that my confidence and knowledge as a Trainee Solicitor has grown quickly because of this.
Working in the Family Department has given me the opportunity to gain a lot of experience in this field. I have worked on Private and Public Law Children cases and Divorce and Ancillary Relief cases. What I enjoy the most about working in the Family Department is the variety of the work and that no two days are the same.
Working at McMillan Williams is a steep learning curve and you are given a great deal of responsibility from day one. Although the work is challenging the support and advice you receive from both your fee earner and the Paralegals/Trainee Solicitors are invaluable.
One of the highlights of the year is the annual advocacy competition run by the firm for all Paralegals and Trainee Solicitors. I took part in this competition for the 1st time in 2014 and I thoroughly enjoyed the process and I am looking forward to the 2015 competition It is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in advocacy which would be rare to gain else where. This year the semi finals took place in Croydon County Court and the final was held at the Royal Courts of Justice.
My highlight so far was representing clients throughout the PLO process. This is usually the client’s final opportunity to stop the Local Authority issuing proceedings in regard to their children. It is very rewarding supporting and advising the clients during this stressful situation and seeing the clients make positive changes in their lives.
