MW strongly believes in being a good Corporate citizen and we strive to exhibit this through investment in our people and the people we represent.
We are committed to, and rightly celebrate, our strong principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion throughout all aspects of our business. Currently, 52% of our partners are female and 35% are of Black or Mixed Ethnic backgrounds and we have Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender staff at all levels of our business.
In other words Diversity is in our DNA
Gender Pay Gap Data
In accordance with legislation you can download MW Solicitors Gender Pay Gap Report 2017
In 2015 we were recognised by the Black Solicitors Network Diversity League Tables as first placed UK 100 firm ranking:
- 1st in demographic diversity
- 1st for our percentage of female and ethnic minority partners
- 1st for our percentage of disabled solicitors,
- 1st for our percentage of ethnic minority associates.
The authors of the report say:
"MW Solicitors has the highest levels of ethnic and gender diversity at partner level, it tops the table for ethnic diversity of associates and figures in the top three for gender and ethnic diversity of its trainees.
MW has a good level of representation of Black lawyers among its partners together with those who are from an Asian background.
Our top ranked firm (speaking of the disabled solicitors section) MW Solicitors, is therefore perhaps getting close to a situation where all employees feel comfortable reporting any disability…if people with disabilities are to improve their chances in the labour market, we need to see more firms emulate the example of this top-ranked firm."
In 2014 we won the Working Mums Best SME award and Overall Top Employer award for our strong commitment to female talent retention, support with often challenging children and life issues, and exceptional career progression prospects.
In 2015 one of our solicitors was recently shortlisted as “Modern Claims Lawyer of the Year” for his ground breaking work to change the law allowing adopted children to access biological hereditary records.
Official Solicitors of Brighton & Hove Pride
We have been the Official Solicitors of Brighton Pride since 2015. We are proud supporters our local community through our five South Coast offices in Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Eastbourne and Bognor Regis.
We are proud of our commitment to publicly funded (legal aid) work which represents approximately 25% of our fee income across several work categories including criminal defence, family and childcare, mental health and civil liberties. We are the first legal aid high street practice to obtain external financial investment by The Business Growth Fund.
Diversity and Inclusion Charter
We are signed up to the Law Society Diversity and Inclusion Charter.
Our trainee lawyers programme is one of the most successful in the country. Currently training more than 65 juniors, we achieve over 90% retention due to the scale and scope of our training programmes, which offer prospects and opportunities absent in much of the marketplace. We received a highly commended (runner up) award in the 2015 Croydon Business Excellence Awards for this programme and through all aspects of our business.
Working with Young People
We work with Enabling Enterprise to provide work experiences for up to 60 local primary schoolchildren a year. We run a similar programme for graduates and continue to foster our links with local schools, colleges and universities, holding career talks and presenting at law fairs, giving back to the communities we serve. We are working to open up training routes to qualification through the Equivalent Means Scheme, providing diversity of opportunity and social mobility.
The Charities We Support
Our belief in being good Corporate citizen means we face up to our responsibilities and contribute to the welfare and happiness of others at the same time as achieving our corporate objectives. We encourage our offices to get involved in fundraising opportunities for their local community, and we are proud to support three nominated charitable organisations at a corporate level. You can find out more about them and the work they do on Our Charities page.
