Solicitor - Property Law
I joined McMillan Williams in November 2011, and I started my training contract in October 2012. I have completed a seat in the Property Law Department where I had the opportunity to oversee the various stages of the residential conveyancing process. I have had the opportunity to work on both leasehold and freehold matters, some of which are quite straight forward whilst others are more complicated. No two cases are the same and I enjoy the challenges that this brings. I most enjoy the hands-on experience and the opportunity to put into practice the skills that I have been taught on the Legal Practice Course.
Following the completion of my first seat, I had the opportunity to undertake a seat in the Litigation Department where I have worked on matters involving general contractual disputes and actions against the police. I have found the experience gained to be both challenging and fulfilling, and it has assisted me in developing my knowledge of the substantive and procedural areas of the law.
At McMillan Williams, there is a great deal of support from staff at all levels and the firm promotes a hardworking, professional and client-focused ethos. Whilst working at the firm I have been encouraged and given the opportunity to learn and improve upon my skills and knowledge.
McMillan Williams operates an Advocacy Competition each year in which all trainees and paralegals have to participate. The standard required for the competition is very high and it is an opportunity for participants to fine tune their skills in researching and presenting arguments on a particular area of law.
The competition prepares and imparts greater insight on how to conduct and present ourselves in a real courtroom scenario. I found the experience to be an extremely challenging and rewarding one, and I especially valued the feedback given by the competition facilitators on how to improve our advocacy skills. I was fortunate this year to be chosen as one of the witnesses in the finals of the competition, and as a result, I had the opportunity to give evidence in the High Court.
"I've just had a very good experience selling my house, with the help of Alwayne Brown at MW Solicitors. He sounded rather aloof on the phone but the moment I met him I really liked and trusted him. He is efficient, calm, unflustered, courteous and hard-working.
So good to know your solicitor can sort it all out without worrying you, thus ensuring you need not worry at all." - CM (Feb 2020)
"Alwayne Brown was superb. His work was of a high standard which was particularly important to us when we had not moved house for over 40 years. When dealing with the option to buy by the developer he led us through all the pitfalls with excellent knowledge. In particular he was very patient with us through both processes. I would happily recommend him to anyone who wanted a job done well." - Mr K (June 2018)
