Partner & Head of Media Law Reputation Management

McMillan Williams acts for business and corporate clients upon a full range of media and entertainment law issues, both contentious and non-contentious. Areas of law that we specialise in include defamation, malicious falsehood, privacy, confidence, data protection, journalists and contempt, passing off, trade marks, and copyright.

As part of our services, we analyse and risk assess information and publication systems used by our business and corporate clients. We probe them for weaknesses and provide reports upon the likelihood of a client being in breach of laws ranging from defamation to data protection, then we advise clients on how to tighten up their systems in the most cost effective ways possible.

We assist clients in managing their reputations by advising upon media strategies. We also draft press releases and other statements on behalf of our business clients, in relation to legal and other issues.

When an item has been prepared for publication by a client, we provide pre-publication reviewing services upon it, to minimise the risk of it leading to litigation.

In situations where a client has been threatened with legal proceedings, or has received them, we advise and represent those clients in their disputes. This relates not just to matters dealt with by the courts, but also by regulators such as IPSO and Ofcom. We also commence claims on behalf of clients where their media, entertainment or reputational legal rights have been breached.

In addition, we advise upon and negotiate contracts for businesses that operate in the media world, including copyright licences and assignments, non-disclosure agreements, freelance agreements, commercial contracts, management agreements, publishing contracts, and recording agreements.
